Early Ray – Highway to Jail/Country Music

A month ago, I had never heard of Early Ray, but after hearing about 30 seconds of “Where the Wild Things Are”…. (ok, it was really 23 seconds, right where it says “There is a place…”), I was hooked. I didn’t need to hear anymore to know that I was a fan. About a week later, Troy Perry of New Country Records, had a copy in my hands, and I have listened to this album now over 10 times.
Highway to Jail and Country Music are two separate albums that were released two years apart from each other, but fit together one before the other seamlessly. Highway to Jail came first in 2010 and then Country Music in 2012. Early Ray describes their style as “Carolina Smash Mouth Country”. It is a country/rock sound that is a little heavier than what you might expect from a country album, but is not overwhelming. Comparable styles/sounds include, Eric Church and Eli Young Band, but even they are lighter than Early Ray. Continue reading
